A Messi problem - its complicated

Cristiano Ronaldo thanked his team-mates for helping him to win the coveted Pichichi title. “I have to say thank you to all my team-mates. The Pichichi is for all of us. They have helped me reach the 40 goals”.

And Messi? Well, he was unhappy about not playing while Ronaldo was scoring a ton of goals for Real Madrid. How unhappy was Messi? He was so furious that he was not on the pitch to celebrate the League Championship last week. A teammate pushed him onto the field, put a championship T-shirt on him, and they took a team picture.

Here’s the big question: Will Messi play on Sunday?

It appears to be a no-brainer. The Champions League final is next week. And according to Man U. coach Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United is at the top of their game, in peak condition. A rested Messi could make all the difference.

So, now I make you Messi’s DT, Guardiola. The right thing to do is to rest Messi. But Messi wants to play on Sunday. You are the coach of a superstar who wants to play in a meaningless game to score goals to even the score with Ronaldo. Your star has personal ambitions, and he will hold, most likely, a grudge against you if you don’t let him play on Sunday.

So, what’s your decision? If Messi plays on Sunday, he’s a happy superstar. But you lose the chance to rest him for the Champions final against Manchester United, and you also risk getting him injured.

What would you do? It’s complicated, and someone, either you or Messi, is going to be frustrated. This is a messy problem…Complicated…
